Cancer Crusaders Combine (CCC) was conceptualized in 1998 by an insignificant Indian by name Ramachandran, influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and the ancient Indian wisdom of holistic approach towards health. His three decades long experience first as a Personal Assistant to Dr.Sushila Nayar - a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, a Professor of Community Medicine, a Former Union Health Minister and the Founder Director of the first rural medical college in the country i.e. Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Sewagram, Wardha (Maharashtra), and as a Hospital Administrator of prestigious medical institutes and hospitals in the country, convinced him much more than ever before that taking care of one’s health was better than going after miracle cures, especially for prevention of a dreadful disease like cancer.
The genesis dates back to 1982-84 when he was first an Administrative Officer of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology and later became the first Registrar of Regional Cancer Center, Thiruvananthapuram. That time through books and journals as well as through close interactions with Scientists and Doctors, he learnt about carcinogenic substances such as asbestos and PVC and the havoc’s that it could do to mankind in the long run. In the year 1984 as the Registrar of Regional Cancer Center when he raised up these issues as a primary concern for prevention of cancer he was thrown out of job on fabricated charges and he had a futile legal battle up to the Supreme Court. He chose to silently suffer and not to compromise with his conviction and commitment for cancer crusade. He continued his cancer crusade silently. That time through newspaper articles he warned the people and the Government of Kerala that by 2000 A.D. rather than achieving health for all cancer cases would increase multi-fold if circulation of carcinogenic substances were not checked / controlled. He warned the Government of Kerala that by 2000 A.D. the cancer cases in that state would increase to that level of considering of setting up Cancer Centers in almost all the districts of that state. His pleas went into deaf ears of both political and apolitical leadership. But he survived long up to 2000 A.D. to see that his fears turned out to be a sad reality with cancer cases increasing multifold year after year. That prompted him to conceptualize CCC with a long-term object of prevention of cancer and sole motto of compassion, commitment and co-operation.
After conceptualizing CCC, as a part of cancer crusade Ramachandran undertook a Bharath Yathra. Starting the journey at Kanyakumari on 2nd October 1999 (Gandhi Jayanthi Day) he traveled criss-cross the country upto Kedarnath and then formally concluded the journey at Delhi on 31st August 2000. He traveled all alone without money and he left it for each moment to lead him to the next moment and each place to the next place. This Bharath Yathra was a Divine Experience for him. Thereafter he got much convinced than ever before that for cancer crusade, it is absolutely essential to bring together all systems of medicines known to mankind including spiritual healing. Also he foresaw through cancer prevention drive, prevention of all diseases, promotion of health (physical, mental and spiritual health) and helps all round human development.
